The premiership is on the line, Kylie is coming home, and even the footballs have turned pink. Melbourne is ready for Saturday.
By Saturday morning, Melbourne will be dressed for the Grand Final. Scarves will appear on trams, club colours will fill the streets, and conversations over coffee will turn to Brisbane, Fremantle, and who will hold their breath in the final quarter. It is one of the biggest days of the year, and this time the build-up has a soundtrack only Kylie Minogue can provide.
The Melbourne-born pop star will headline the pre-game entertainment at the MCG on 26 September, making her first AFL Grand Final debut before the Lions and Dockers go head-to-head for the premiership. A fitting homecoming for an artist whose songs have travelled worldwide.
Kylie’s arrival is already visible beyond the stadium. At Footy Fest in Yarra Park, a Team Kylie store is selling a limited AFL collaboration, including pink footballs. Among the purple of Fremantle and the maroon, blue and gold of Brisbane, pink has found its place in Grand Final week. Playful, unmistakably Kylie, and likely to turn up in more than a few photographs before the first bounce.
Kylie is a natural choice for Grand Final day. Her catalogue spans generations, from the instant recognition of The Loco-Motion to the first beat of Can’t Get You Out of My Head and the renewed excitement of Padam Padam. Across nearly four decades, she has earned 18 ARIA Awards and two Grammys while continuing to release music people want to dance to. There are few artists who could bring that much history to the MCG and still make the moment feel fresh.
And, of course, what will Kylie wear?
Fashion has been part of her performances from the beginning, whether she leans into disco sparkle, sculptural stage wear, or something more unexpected. She knows how to make an outfit feel like part of the song without letting it overshadow the music. The Grand Final brings a new setting for that instinct: the MCG in daylight, a crowd of 100,000 and cameras catching every detail.
For Kylie, the occasion is personal. Announcing the performance, she called the MCG “forever iconic” and said she planned to watch the match after her set. She may be the headliner before the first bounce, but once the game begins, she’ll follow it alongside everyone else.
Melbourne artist G Flip will open the pre-game show, followed by Kylie, while Michael Paynter will sing the national anthem and Mike Brady will perform Up There Cazaly. Then, at 2.30 pm, the focus shifts to the field. Brisbane and Fremantle, with very different histories at stake: the Lions are chasing a third consecutive premiership, and the Dockers their first.
The setlist is still a secret, so is Kylie’s outfit. Melbourne gets to look forward to both. Nerves, noise, and an enormous game—and, somewhere in the crowd, a few sparkly pink Sherrins catching the light.
