Australian fashion label MOTTO celebrates 40 years in the fashion industry as mother-daughter duo Faye and Lauren share their journey, family bond and passion for empowering women through fashion.
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the inspiring mother-and-daughter duo behind iconic Australian fashion label MOTTO as the brand marks an incredible 40 years in the Australian fashion industry.
Built on passion, creativity and empowering women, MOTTO has become a much-loved name in Australian fashion, with family at the very heart of the brand.

Lauren On Family, Fashion & Taking Over MOTTO – A Relationship Built On Passion
Lauren describes her relationship with her mother Faye as “energetic, passionate and empowered,” both personally and professionally.
She says what she admires most about her mother is her unwavering mindset and refusal to focus on outside opinions.
“Mum never looks backwards — everything is about growth and becoming better every single day. She genuinely wants to lift women up and never compares herself to anyone else,” Lauren says.
Working together has only strengthened their bond over the years.
“We’re incredibly close and honestly finish each other’s sentences half the time. Going through the highs and challenges of business together naturally brings you closer,” she says.
Lauren also shared that one of the biggest lessons Faye has taught her is to stay focused and never waste energy on things that don’t inspire growth or positivity.

Working Side-By-Side
As the business has expanded, Lauren says they’ve naturally stepped into more clearly defined roles, while still sharing the same passion and vision for the brand.
“There’s no real need for boundaries or strict rules between us — the right person naturally steps into the role where they’re needed most,” she explains.
And when it comes to disagreements?
“Definitely me,” she jokes. “But really, we both just want the best outcome for our customers.”
Reflecting on her proudest moment, Lauren says officially taking over the business in 2021 was incredibly emotional.
“It wasn’t forced or planned around a timeline. My parent’s genuinely believed MOTTO was ready for its next chapter and trusting me with that is something I’ll always be proud of.”

Faye On Watching Her Daughter Shine – Creating Space For The Next Generation
Faye describes their relationship as “respectful, admirable and team-minded.”
She says Lauren’s strength, kindness and creativity are qualities she deeply admires, while also acknowledging that stepping back at times has been an important part of their evolution as business partners.
“With both of us having strong personalities, I had to create space for her to really shine and step into her own power,” Faye says.
One lesson that has stayed with her throughout the journey.
“You can be a powerful force with grace.”

A Shared Vision
For Faye, working alongside her daughter is something she describes as “living my best life.”
“It has allowed me to still do what I love while also becoming best friends with my daughter,” she says.
While creative overlap naturally happens within the business, Faye says disagreements are never about winning.
“It’s always about finding the best solution and outcome for the business. If Lauren wins, so do I.”
When asked about her proudest moment, the answer came easily.
“Seeing my girl shine and step into her power.”
