Melbourne Christmas Cold Dip 2026: St Kilda’s First-Ever Irish Plunge for a Great Cause!

Melbourne Christmas Cold Dip Is Supporting Sacred Heart Mission

Christmas has come early for Melbourne this year as Jimmy O’Neill’s Whiskey & Ale House brings an iconic Irish tradition to St Kilda Beach with the inaugural Melbourne Christmas Cold Dip, raising vital funds for Sacred Heart Mission.

Inspired by Ireland’s famous Christmas Day Cold Dip, adventurous swimmers gather to brave the icy waters before heading home to continue festive celebrations with family and friends. Now, for the first time, Melburnians will have the chance to embrace the tradition while supporting a worthy local cause.

On Saturday 25 July at 10am, participants will gather in front of the St Kilda Sea Baths before taking the plunge into the chilly waters of St Kilda Beach. Afterwards, everyone is invited to warm up at the nearby Acland Street home of Jimmy O’Neill’s, where traditional Irish hospitality and winter comforts await.

More than just a festive tradition, the Melbourne Christmas Cold Dip aims to support local St Kilda women and children experiencing homelessness during Melbourne’s coldest months. Whether you’re plunging solo or taking part as a team, half of every registration fee will go directly towards Sacred Heart Mission.

Wade Piva, Director of Engagement and Development at Sacred Heart Mission, explains:

“Every dollar they’ll raise will help provide nutritious meals, crisis support and housing for people who are going through hard times here in our community.”

Sacred Heart Mission is a Victorian not-for-profit organisation providing vital support across housing, health and wellbeing, aged care, women’s services and social and economic inclusion programs. Founded on the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, the organisation continues to uphold the inherent dignity, human rights and self-determination of every person it supports.

Jimmy O’Neill’s owner and St Kilda local Zenita O’Neill said the idea was born from a desire to give back during what has been an especially difficult winter.

“Melbourne is absolutely freezing right now and as a St Kilda local it’s heartbreaking to see the amount of women and children sleeping rough this winter. With the majority experiencing ‘hidden homelessness’ and sleeping in rooming houses, cars or couch surfing wherever they can,” she said.

“We wanted to do something meaningful for these people that is also fun and honours some of the craic from home that Jimmy is renowned for. We hope lots of people get on board for this one.”

With community spirit at its heart, the Melbourne Christmas Cold Dip offers a unique opportunity to experience an Irish tradition while making a genuine difference for local women and children facing homelessness this winter.

As Melbourne continues to embrace unique community events, this inaugural Christmas Cold Dip promises to be one of the city’s most memorable winter fundraisers—bringing people together for a refreshing challenge, plenty of Irish spirit and, most importantly, a cause that will have a lasting impact.
