The Book of Mormon Premieres in Melbourne: A Night of Laughter and Revelation
Last night, the much-anticipated production of ‘The Book of Mormon’ made its dazzling return at the iconic Princess Theatre in Melbourne, and the stars came out in full force to celebrate this monumental occasion. Among the attendees were beloved personalities such as Darcy Moore, Dee Salmin, Ash Pollard, Tiffiny Hall, Ed Kavalee, Celia Pacquola, and Livinia Nixon, all eager to experience one of the most celebrated musicals of our time with many having seen it before.

The Book of Mormon first graced Melbourne’s stage in 2015, setting a remarkable record for the highest selling on-sale period in the Princess Theatre’s illustrious 159-year history. It’s no wonder that the buzz surrounding its return has been palpable. Having attended the premiere, I can confidently say that the production lives up to its reputation—and then some.

Alinta Chidzey who played Satine in Moulin Rouge said, “ I love the comedy and the performers are always incredible, I’m excited to see this new production.”

As a first-time viewer, I found myself in fits of laughter and disbelief at the sheer audacity of the humour on display. There were moments when I thought, “Did they just say that?” The show’s unapologetic approach to sensitive topics and its exploration of faith through hilariously inappropriate antics might raise eyebrows, but it all somehow works. The audience’s enthusiastic response was a testament to the production’s ability to shock and delight simultaneously.
Ben Murphy also attending opening night said, “this is my fourth time seeing ‘Book of Mormon’ if you’ve never seen it before you are going to end up like me, now my fifth time, and then who knows we could end up seeing it ten times. It’s the best ticket in town.”

At its core, The Book of Mormon is a poignant tale about individuals grappling with their identities in a world that often contradicts what they have been taught. It’s a story that resonates deeply, reminding us that, despite our differences, we all share a common quest for understanding and acceptance.

The talented cast features Sean Johnston, known for his role in Hairspray, as the ambitious Elder Price, and Nick Cox, who previously captivated audiences in Beauty and the Beast, as the lovable but misguided Elder Cunningham. During Australia’s first ever Book of Mormon media call this morning, both actors shared their delight in the show’s reception, noting that even members of the Mormon community have attended and found joy in the humour, appreciating the production for what it is—a light-hearted romp through the complexities of belief and faith.
