Launched in colourful style! 250 FREE events – the MPavilion is your summer place to play.

Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp officially opened the 2022 MPavilion on Thursday 8 December, speaking at the event she says it will be a fun and special space for all the community to enjoy.

The vibrantly beautiful canopy was designed by all(zone), an internationally acclaimed architecture practice based in Bangkok.

MPavilion CEO Sam Redston says it feels exhilarating to unveil the 9th MPavillion and having worked on all nine, this is the most fun out of all of them, he says.

“It’s the most joyous one with a playful relaxed design – it feels like an organic creature that may have come out of the sea,” he says.

Sam is passionate about the pivotal role MPavilion plays in bringing design, architecture, and art to the people of Melbourne.

“We trying to demonstrate how design can transform and improve our lives,” he says.

The launch event included a mesmerizing Welcome to Country song by Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham AO.

The opening weekend festivities include the Thai Festival on Saturday 10 December. It’s to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Australia. The all-day event will champion Thai architecture, design, art, and culture in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy and the Thai Australian Chamber.

The MPavilion 2022 season features hundreds of local and international collaborators spanning talks, workshops, performances, kid-friendly experiences, and community projects.

MPavilion 2022 is open free to the public in the Queen Victoria Gardens, Melbourne, from Thursday 8 December 2022 until Thursday 6 April 2023.
