CROWN UNLEASHES THE REINVIGORATED SPIRIT OF MELBOURNE WITH LUNAR
NEW YEAR DOCUMENTARY – HEAR MELBOURNE ROAR: THE YEAR OF THE TIGER
For more than 20 years, Crown Melbourne has celebrated Lunar New Year by hosting numerous festivities across its resort for the wider community to enjoy. This year, the festival will involve a three-week installation representing all 12 of the Zodiac animals, a lantern display in The Atrium, a traditional ‘Dotting of the Eye’ ceremony, roving entertainment including live ‘Lion Dance’ performances, and a selection of Lunar New Year dining experiences at Crown’s premium restaurants, Silks and Conservatory.
Acknowledging the challenging two years that have preceded us, and welcoming the strength and prosperity widely associated with the Year of the Tiger, this year Crown Melbourne has also partnered with local filmmakers Archie & Alicia and photographer Mark Chew on a short documentary titled Hear Melbourne Roar: The Year of the Tiger.
The Chinese Zodiac of the Tiger symbolises strength, courage, bravery and resilience, with the documentary drawing connections to these characteristics and the tenacity of Melburnians throughout the pandemic.
Talent interviewed include Silks Restaurant Chef de Cuisine, Kar Loong Yee; David’s and Oriental Tea House Founder, David Zhou; Director and Principal Immigration Advisor for ProActive Legal (Formerly S & W Migration), Sean Dong; Playking Productions Associate Producer and Founder of Cha Latte, Jess Zhang, and TV Presenter, Francesca Hung.
Filmmakers Archie Chew and Alicia Easaw-Mamutil say one of the greatest gifts about their jobs as a producer and director is bringing narratives to life in such a way that uncovers the deeper side to their subjects.
“It has been an incredible experience to be able to tell the stories of people who are passionate about what they do and where they come from, and we hope when people watch this they will feel as inspired as we did when making it,” they said.
Crown Melbourne General Manager Community, Ann Peacock, says Lunar New Year has become a much loved event at Crown, with special meaning for all of Melbourne this year after two years of the pandemic.
“Lunar New Year is such a significant cultural event for so many here in Melbourne and there are interesting connections that can be drawn between this year’s zodiac animal and the resilience of our city and community,” she said.
