THE EMPOWERMENT THAT COMES FROM DRESSING UP by Marisa Ferraro.

Regardless of how you feel on the confidence barometer, there is something quite powerful in styling an outfit for yourself and putting it on. Business style dressing also known as power dressing will not only impress others but can also change the way you interact with the people around you.

There are days where we feel down, flat, stressed, and unmotivated but a burst of effort that one can make in getting dressed or even putting some lipstick on can make all the difference. A spark of difference to your self-esteem, confidence, and your overall vibe. There is a sense of empowerment that comes from dressing up because it is a complete picture.

The reason why dressing up brings about this feeling is because you are doing something for yourself. Taking pride in your appearance and how you feel about yourself. For example, why do stilettos have such a connotation of power and success? They instantly give you confidence and that girl boss feeling. You look taller, thinner, and have a sense of attitude as you stride along.

Whether we like it or not, people presume a lot about a person by the way they dress. Wearing matching colours from head to toe is known as tonal dressing. Tonal dressing is a simple way to look effortlessly chic. For example, a faux fur leather skirt with a crepe shirt and matching bag all in red is very flattering to the eye. A continuous line of colour automatically creates an elongated look. Mixing textures also keeps the styled look interesting. This is an easy way to pull off a powerful style and tonal dressing is a vibe for 2021.

Power dressing today predominantly consists of suiting for both men and women. Blending suiting pieces such as slacks, blazers, skirts, vests, and trousers is also popular as businesses today have a more relaxed way of dressing.

Your footwear is the most important accessory to complete the look. The nature of your shoe tends to dictate the overall impact of your outfit. The wrong shoes can cheapen the look. Yes, a runner can look cool with a suit, but it won’t have the same finish as if a woman puts on a heel or a man wears a beautiful leather brogue.

The perfect partnership to empowerment is the outfit to accompany your feeling and attitude. If you look in the mirror and all you have on is an old sweater and joggers, your hair disheveled, and no makeup (apart from having a lazy day or two!) then that is fine. But what if you put on a colourful top, a pair of fitted pants, brushing your hair, and putting on some lipstick and shoes?

I can guarantee you would feel better, encouraged, happier, and more confident as you have just done your self-esteem some justice. You may almost feel that you can conquer the world. And that is Empowerment. It is all about taking pride in the way you look. A little effort can go a long way. You don’t have to dress like you’re going to a gala ball every day but a few twitches to your outfit can go the distance. Some simple tips are:

  • Turn dressing up into fun. Don’t be afraid to dress to impress.
  • Try a different colour something that makes a statement.
  • Spanx can do wonders. Tighten, secure, and smooth the areas that you feel least confident about. A fabulous trick of the trade.
  • Give tonal dressing a try.
  •  Shoes!! Heels can elevate your confidence in a big way and men invest in a pair of brogues.
