Louis Tomlinson – How Did We Get Here? World Tour
Louis Tomlinson was one of the biggest surprises for me on Tuesday evening at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena.

Of course, I knew just how popular he was from his One Direction days, but I hadn’t quite realised how talented he was until I heard him sing live. And let me tell you, he certainly knows how to put on a show!

Performing as part of his How Did We Get Here? World Tour, Tomlinson isn’t one for many words between songs, but he more than makes up for it with his music. Backed by an absolutely fabulous band, he delivered a high-energy performance filled with powerful vocals, electric guitars and the kind of atmosphere that reminds you just how special live music can be.
I’d describe his sound as a mix of indie rock, alternative rock and a little pop. It’s a musical direction that sets him apart from his One Direction days, with a raw, guitar-driven edge and catchy melodies that make his songs so appealing.

Opening with Lemonade, Tomlinson immediately had the crowd on its feet, launching into a fantastic setlist that included On Fire, Written All Over Your Face, Out of My System, Saturdays and Kill My Mind.
One of the evening’s standout moments came when he performed One Direction’s Night Changes. Hearing him sing the beloved hit live was a beautiful reminder of where his journey began, and judging by the audience’s reaction, the song still holds a special place in his fans’ hearts.

There was also a brilliant rendition of the Foo Fighters’ My Hero, showcasing another side of his musical talent and proving that his voice is equally at home with rock as it is with pop.
And while Tomlinson isn’t one for lengthy conversations between songs, he did take a moment to share just how much Melbourne means to him.
“I’ve been coming here since I was 19,” he told the crowd.
“I love spending time here. Great place, great weather and good people. I have a good mate that lives here, so that’s nice.”
He went on to reflect on his long connection with Australia, adding that coming here for the best part of 15 years was “so special”.

It was a lovely moment and a reminder that, despite his international success, Tomlinson hasn’t forgotten the places and people who have supported him throughout his career.
What impressed me most was his effortless stage presence. The performance had nothing unnecessary. It was simply Louis, his incredibly talented band and thousands of adoring fans singing along to every word.
The evening finished with Miss You and Palaces, bringing a fabulous night of live music to a close.
I arrived knowing Louis Tomlinson as one of the boys from One Direction. I left with a completely different appreciation of him as a solo artist.
And isn’t that one of the greatest things about live music? Discovering just how talented an artist really is when you experience them in person.
Louis Tomlinson, you certainly won me over, and I suspect I wasn’t the only one!
