An Evening Without Kate Bush: Sarah-Louise Young Delights Melbourne with Music, Laughter and Magic.

An Evening Without Kate Bush  – Review by Craig Lawson

I’ll admit, my knowledge of Kate Bush is pretty much limited to Running Up That Hill, thanks to Stranger Things. So, as Sarah-Louise Young joked during the show, I probably wouldn’t qualify as a true Bush fan! But after spending an evening in her wonderfully entertaining company, I can certainly understand the fascination.

An Evening Without Kate Bush is a funny, heartfelt and beautifully sung celebration of one of music’s most iconic artists. Young is an absolute delight, with a stunning voice, infectious humour and a wonderfully engaging stage presence.

And this is certainly no ordinary tribute show!

Audience participation is a big part of the fun, with hands waving in the air, a group of friends invited on stage as backing singers and, in one particularly sweet moment, a married couple sharing a slow dance. Young has a lovely way of bringing everyone into the experience, making the audience feel just as much a part of the performance as she is.

One of my favourite moments came when she began Wuthering Heights, only for the audience to burst into song. Rather than interrupt, she simply stepped back and let them have their moment. It was spontaneous, beautiful and a wonderful reminder of just how much Kate Bush’s music means to people.

And, of course, hearing Running Up That Hill performed live was a personal highlight. Having only really discovered the song through Stranger Things, it was quite special to experience it in such an intimate theatrical setting.

What struck me most throughout the evening was the genuine affection in the room. You could feel the love Young and the audience have for Kate Bush, and how her extraordinary music continues to bring people from all walks of life around the world together.

Young captures the spirit of Kate Bush while bringing her own personality, humour, and theatrical flair to the stage. It’s a performance that celebrates not only the music but the people who have loved it for generations.

Funny, moving and filled with beautiful singing, An Evening Without Kate Bush is a charming celebration of music, connection and one of the most distinctive artists of our time.
