At 68, Madonna has once again proved why she remains the undisputed Queen of Pop, leading the VMA nominations with an incredible 13 nods and edging out a much younger Taylor Swift, who followed closely behind with 11.
For Madonna, the night also marked an extraordinary full-circle moment. The music icon reflected that she performed at the first MTV Video Music Awards 43 years ago—and more than four decades later, she was back at the centre of one of music’s biggest nights.
Madonna went on to take home Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring You Love,” and Best Dance for “Confessions 11.”

“First of all, I would like to thank my fingers, because I can always count on them.”
She then reflected on her history with MTV, telling the audience: “Most of you were probably not born … but I performed at the first MTV Awards 43 years ago.” She recalled losing a stiletto during her famous 1984 performance, diving onto the stage to make the mishap look intentional, and accidentally exposing herself. When she returned backstage feeling pleased with the performance, she said her manager told her, “My career was over.”
The speech then became more personal. Madonna said she had spent the previous year and a half “finding myself, believing in myself” and making the music she genuinely wanted to make. She described that as what being an artist means to her and encouraged the artists in the room to spend their lives doing the same.
She finished by thanking longtime collaborator Stuart Price, calling him her “ride or die,” and reflecting on returning to Confessions two decades later with Confessions II.
Two Generations of Pop Royalty: Madonna and Taylor Swift Share a Special VMA Moment
Taylor Swift had a huge night of her own, taking home Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and, for the first time, the Artist Director award for her new track “Patient Zero.”
Between them, Madonna and Swift claimed four of the six major awards, bringing together two generations of pop royalty on one stage.
But perhaps one of the most memorable moments of the evening happened away from the podium.
Swift and Madonna appeared warm and chatty at the awards, with Swift deliberately making her way over to greet the Queen of Pop. The pair were seen happily talking before posing together for a photograph — a fitting moment between two women who have defined very different generations of popular music.
There was no rivalry in sight. Instead, the photograph captured what appeared to be genuine mutual respect between two of the biggest female artists in music history.
For Madonna, the evening was yet another reminder of the extraordinary longevity of her career. Forty-three years after appearing at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards, she is not simply being celebrated for what she achieved in the past — she is still competing, creating and collecting awards alongside today’s biggest stars.
