Melbourne Theatre Company has unveiled an all-star cast for its highly anticipated new staging of Uncle Vanya, bringing one of Anton Chekhov’s most celebrated works to Melbourne audiences as part of its 2026 season.

Directed by Anne-Louise Sarks and adapted by acclaimed playwright Joanna Murray-SmithUncle Vanya will be presented at the Arts Centre Melbourne Playhouse from 21 July to 22 August 2026.

The production features a remarkable ensemble of stage and screen talent including Fayssal Bazzi, Carolyn Bock, Don Bridges, Daniel Henshall, Evelyn Krape, Philippa Northeast, Shaun Micallef andCatherine Văn-Davies, creating one of the strongest theatrical casts assembled this year.

A Fresh Adaptation of a Timeless Classic

More than 125 years after it was first written, Uncle Vanya continues to resonate with audiences through its exploration of family tensions, unfulfilled dreams, environmental concerns and the search for meaning in everyday life.

Joanna Murray-Smith’s adaptation follows the success of her acclaimed 2025 adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley, bringing fresh psychological insight to Chekhov’s enduring masterpiece while preserving the emotional depth and wit that have made the work a cornerstone of world theatre.

The story centres on characters trapped by circumstance, longing for change yet struggling to break free from lives that no longer fulfil them. Its themes remain as relevant today as they were in 1897.

An Extraordinary Cast Returns to the Stage

The production marks a significant theatrical return for several beloved Australian performers.

Daniel Henshall returns to the stage for the first time since 2013, while Shaun Micallef makes his first theatrical appearance since 2016.
