Cartier Exhibition Melbourne 2026 Review: Inside NGV’s Stunning Winter Masterpieces Showcase
Now open at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Cartier is the highly anticipated 2026 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® exhibition and one of the most extraordinary showcases ever presented in Australia.
Featuring nearly 400 remarkable jewels, timepieces and precious objects, alongside rare archival materials, original design drawings, photographs and sketchbooks, this Australian-exclusive exhibition offers visitors an intimate look into the history, craftsmanship and enduring legacy of the world’s most celebrated jewellery maison.

Direct from London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, the expanded Melbourne presentation includes nearly 300 works never before seen in Australia, making it one of the must-see cultural events of 2026.

A Dazzling Exhibition Design Experience
The exhibition experience extends far beyond the jewellery itself.
The never-before-seen exhibition design is a collaboration between the NGV, Studio Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD, two multidisciplinary design practices based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Inspired by colour, light and materiality — qualities synonymous with Cartier’s creations — the immersive exhibition environment beautifully complements the extraordinary collection on display.

The Legacy of Cartier: The Jeweller of Kings
The exhibition charts the remarkable evolution of Cartier and its transformation into one of the most prestigious luxury brands in history.

Under the leadership of brothers Louis, Pierre and Jacques Cartier, the Parisian family business expanded into London and New York, becoming the world’s first internationally recognised jewellery maison. Their commitment to exceptional craftsmanship, innovation and design excellence attracted royalty, aristocrats, socialites and Hollywood stars alike.
Cartier’s reputation became so renowned that King Edward VII famously described the house as “The Jeweller of Kings and the King of Jewellers” when granting its first Royal Warrant in 1904.

The Tiaras That Stole the Show
One of the exhibition’s most breathtaking moments is its collection of more than 30 magnificent tiaras.
The final gallery presents an extraordinary display of 24 tiaras, showcasing some of the finest examples of Cartier craftsmanship ever created.

Among the highlights is the celebrated Scroll Tiara (1902), famously worn by Lady Clementine Churchill at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953 and later by Rihanna on the cover of W Magazine in 2016.
Visitors are also greeted by the stunning Manchester Tiara, commissioned in 1903 by Consuelo Montagu, Dowager Duchess of Manchester, who supplied the diamonds herself.
The scale, sparkle and artistry of these pieces are truly mesmerising.
Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Royal Icons
The exhibition brings together an extraordinary collection of jewels owned and worn by some of the world’s most famous women.

A standout piece is the spectacular ruby and diamond necklace gifted to Elizabeth Taylor by her third husband, film producer Mike Todd. Featuring seven exceptional Burmese rubies surrounded by brilliant diamonds, Taylor famously described it as being “like the sun – lit up and made of red fire.”

Also on display are several treasured Cartier creations belonging to Grace Kelly following her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, including a multi-strand pearl and coral necklace and a charming gold and pearl poodle brooch inspired by her beloved pet Oliver.
Other notable highlights include Princess Margaret’s diamond rose clip brooch, Wallis Simpson’s famous Flamingo brooch and her iconic Panther sapphire clip featuring a remarkable 152.35-carat cabochon sapphire.

To see Princess Margaret’s brooch in person was extraordinary. The scale, brilliance and craftsmanship are difficult to comprehend until viewed up close.

The Dazzling Beauty of Cartier’s Tutti Frutti Collection
For many visitors, Cartier’s iconic Tutti Frutti creations will be among the exhibition’s most unforgettable displays.
Characterised by vibrant carved emeralds, rubies and sapphires, these masterpieces draw inspiration from Indian jewellery traditions and represent some of Cartier’s most imaginative designs.
The spectacular Daisy Fellowes Tutti Frutti necklace from 1936 is undoubtedly one of the exhibition’s showstoppers. Rich in colour, craftsmanship and history, it perfectly captures Cartier’s ability to transform gemstones into wearable works of art.

Personally, the Tutti Frutti collection left me completely mesmerised. The brilliance of the sapphires, emeralds and rubies combined with the intricate detailing created one of the most memorable moments of the exhibition. It was impossible not to stand and admire the artistry behind these remarkable creations.
A Personal Reflection
Walking through Cartier at NGV is an experience that leaves you genuinely speechless.
I found myself standing in awe before gemstones beyond imagination, diamonds larger than most people will ever see in their lifetime, and creations that transcend jewellery to become works of art.

Every gallery revealed another masterpiece. Every display case told a story of glamour, craftsmanship, royalty and innovation.

This is Cartier on a scale that is almost impossible to imagine until you experience it for yourself.
Melbourne’s Cultural Jewel of 2026
Steve Dimopoulos, Minister for Sport and Major Events, highlighted the importance of the exhibition for Victoria, noting that Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibitions not only provide world-class cultural experiences but also support jobs, tourism and businesses across the state.
NGV Director Tony Ellwood AM described the exhibition as a celebration of the vision and innovation of the Cartier brothers, while Victoria & Albert Museum Senior Curator Helen Molesworth said the exhibition demonstrates how Cartier transformed from a Parisian family jeweller into a globally recognised cultural icon.
Pierre Rainero, Director of Cartier Image, Style and Heritage, said the Melbourne presentation offers visitors an opportunity to discover pieces never before seen in Australia while exploring jewellery as a powerful artistic expression.
