A Historic Melbourne Cup: Celebrating a Decade of Triumph and Trailblazing Women

Yesterday’s Melbourne Cup was nothing short of extraordinary, marking a decade since the iconic win of Michelle Payne OAM aboard Makybe Diva. As the nation paused for the race that stops the nation, the atmosphere was filled with nostalgia, joy, and ground-breaking achievements in the world of horse racing.

Michelle, alongside her brother Stevie Payne and their partners, took a moment to reminisce about that unforgettable day ten years ago. Their bond, forged through shared experiences and triumphs, was a testament to the enduring spirit of family and the power of perseverance in the face of challenges.
In a fitting tribute to this monumental occasion, renowned artist Vincent Fantauzzo unveiled a stunning portrait of Michelle, capturing her essence as a racing trailblazer. Alongside her portrait, he also showcased a piece dedicated to Knight’s Choice, last year’s Melbourne Cup winner ridden by Robbie Dolan. These artworks symbolize not just individual achievements but the collective journey of women in racing, breaking barriers, and inspiring future generations.

Speaking with the media prior to the race, Michelle said, “it’s a wide-open race, I don’t think we could pick the winner, we have three of the girls riding in the Melbourne Cup this year, including Jamie Melham on one of the favourites.” Perhaps this was all the information we needed to put our bets on, after all it seems.

This year’s Cup was especially memorable as Jamie Melham made history as the second female jockey to claim the coveted title, riding Half Yours to victory. Jamie’s joy was palpable as she reflected on her incredible year, which included winning the Caulfield Cup and tying the knot. “I’m not sure if it’s sunk in just yet,” she said, her eyes shining with emotion. With her grandfather passing away just a week prior, Jamie paid tribute to him, sharing how he was her greatest supporter and had witnessed her recent successes.

Both Michelle and Jamie have etched their names in the annals of racing history, creating unforgettable moments that will inspire and uplift for years to come. Their victories are not just personal achievements but milestones for women in sports, highlighting the strength and determination that defines them.
Amidst the celebration, I had the pleasure of speaking with Michelle about her long-standing connection with fashion designer Jason Grech. “For Jason to dress me today on this decade celebration is truly special,” she shared, reflecting on the significance of the moment. Their collaboration symbolizes the intersection of fashion and sport, another realm where women are making waves and redefining norms.
As the rain held off on this historic Melbourne Cup, the stories of triumph, resilience, and celebration lingered in the air. The legacies of Michelle Payne and Jamie Melham are now forever intertwined with the rich tapestry of racing history.
