Disney’s ‘Tarzan – The Stage Musical’ opens in St Kilda at The National Theatre! This adaptation brings to life the beloved animated film in a spectacular stage production, blending breathtaking aerial choreography with the iconic music of Phil Collins. Featuring unforgettable hits like the Academy Award-winning “You’ll Be in My Heart,” “Son of Man,” and “Two Worlds,” this production is an action-packed adventure for audiences of all ages.
At the heart of this thrilling tale is Tarzan, portrayed by the exceptionally talented Joshua Russell, known for his spellbinding performances in Moulin Rouge. Russell captures the essence of Tarzan, a man raised by apes, who struggles to find his true identity. His portrayal is both powerful and poignant, pulling the audience into Tarzan’s world as he navigates the complexities of belonging to two very different worlds.
Joining him on this wild journey is the stunning Emily Robinson as Jane Porter. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, Robinson shines both visually and vocally, bringing a modern twist to the classic character. Her chemistry with Russell is palpable, adding depth to their captivating love story amidst the lush jungle backdrop.
The dynamic duo is further enriched by the remarkable talents of Sarah Murr and Devon Braithwaite, both known for their work in Hadestown and Chicago. Murr and Braithwaite reunite on stage as Kala and Kerchak, delivering performances that resonate with emotional intensity and authenticity. Their powerful portrayals of Tarzan’s adoptive parents add layers of complexity to the narrative, demonstrating the bond of family.
While the staging and props may be minimal, the dazzling performances of the cast truly take centre stage. The aerial choreography is mesmerising, as Tarzan swings through the air, which he is famously known for. The seamless blend of music and movement immerses the audience into the jungle and cleverly blurs man and nature.
