Annie Shines Bright on Melbourne’s Opening Night

Last Thursday, Melbourne was treated to a dazzling spectacle as the beloved musical ‘Annie’ graced the stage, delivering an Opening Night that was nothing short of magical. This production has truly transcended expectations, showcasing mesmerising sets, stunning costumes, and a cast that could only be described as stellar.

At the helm of this enchanting journey is none other than Anthony Warlow, who perfectly embodies Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks with a charisma that captivates the audience from the very first moment. Opposite him, the phenomenal Debora Krizak brings a delightful wickedness to Miss Hannigan, ensuring that every scene is filled with both humour and heart.

Annie has lasted the test of time. Anthony says, “I really feel this time around I have the part right; it’s taken me this long to get it the way I want it to be.”

Amanda Lea LaVergne plays the part of Grace Farrell who works for the board of orphans and is the love interest of Oliver Warbucks.

Amanda has come to Melbourne from New York City where she has resided for the past 20 years and performed at some of Broadways finest theatres.

Amanda says, “Annie has surpassed the test of time as it comes from the idea of hope, we can always use a little extra hope. There is always another morning to wake up to, if we’re lucky, and we never know what’s around the corner. It’s the depth of hope and it’s palpable in this production. It will really resonate with the audience.

Rising star Mackenzie Dunn takes on the role of the glamorous Lily St. Regis, while Keanu Gonzalez steps into the shoes of “Rooster” Hannigan with infectious energy that has the audience on the edge of their seats. Amanda Lea LaVergne shines as Grace Farrell, balancing elegance with warmth, and in a delightful twist, former Wiggle Greg Page makes his musical theatre debut as President Roosevelt, adding an extra layer of excitement to the cast.

Mackenzie and Keanu recently starred in Grease the musical together, they both poses the triple threat of being able to sing, dance and act and work incredibly together on stage. They have an amazing friendship outside of the theatre also. Mackenzie says, “ we are so lucky that the friendship we built on Grease we can pop into a completely different world and scenario. We have come in guns blazing as we didn’t have to do all the nice to meet you work, we are already there.

Debora Krizak stole the show when it came to laughs as the infamous Miss Hannigan at the opening night of ‘Annie,’ leaving the audience in stitches. Krizak’s portrayal of Hannigan was a delightful mix of mischief and charm, capturing the audience’s hearts while also showcasing her witty one-liners to her exaggerated expressions.

The three talented young performers sharing the titular role of Annie, Dakota Chanel, Isabella Hayden, and Lilleth McIntosh, bring their unique flair to the beloved character, but it was Isabella Hayden who stole the show on Opening Night. Her performance was simply enchanting, embodying the spirit and resilience of Annie in a way that left the audience in awe.

With an iconic score featuring timeless classics like “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” and “Tomorrow,” the musical delivered an unforgettable experience that had everyone singing along. The energy in the theatre was palpable, and the cheers of the audience echoed throughout the venue.

Among the star-studded attendees were notable figures like Patti Newton, Harrison Craig, Jessica Raffa, and John Foreman, all of whom were treated to a night filled with joy and nostalgia. As the final curtain fell, the cast was met with a standing ovation, a testament to the unforgettable performance that had just unfolded.
