Tarantino meets Shakespeare in this bold reimagining of Reservoir Dogs, packed with drama, humour, tension and theatrical flair.
The familiar story of a botched heist, suspicion and betrayal is transformed through the language, style and spectacle of Shakespeare into a theatrical experience that feels both fresh and wonderfully unexpected.
One of the greatest strengths of this production is its cast. Every performance is delivered with conviction, creating an atmosphere thick with tension and intrigue from beginning to end. Sitting in the front row of Theatre Works’ intimate performance space only heightened the experience. With the actors just metres away, you could see every expression, feel every confrontation and become completely immersed in the drama unfolding before you.
Cassandra Hart as Sir White is an absolute delight, bold, dramatic and deliciously sassy. She brings enormous presence to the role, balancing the heightened Shakespearean style with humour, attitude and plenty of swagger.
Elysia Janssen as Sir Orange delivers some of the production’s most raw and affecting moments. There’s such an intensity and vulnerability to her performance that, sitting so close to the action, at times it genuinely felt as though what was unfolding in front of you was real. Her dramatic impact is incredibly powerful.
The live music is another highlight. The musicians cleverly rework songs associated with the film into Shakespearean-inspired arrangements, with familiar favourites including Like a Virgin, Lime in the Coconut and, of course, Stuck in the Middle with You. It’s playful, unexpected and adds another layer of creativity to an already inventive production.
Zac Rose as Holdaway, who also performs as one of the musicians, brings a completely different energy. His jovial, playful presence and musicianship add plenty of personality to the production, while his contribution to the ending sends the audience out on a wonderfully fun high.
Rather than simply feeling like a parody, William Shakespeare’s Reservoir Dogs stands confidently as its own work. It’s inventive, funny, suspenseful and packed with theatrical flair, while never losing the tension and intrigue at the heart of the original story.
For me, the highlight was being so close to the action and witnessing these wonderfully heightened performances unfold right in front of me. Dramatic, clever and wonderfully entertaining, this is a fresh interpretation that proves Shakespeare and Tarantino make a surprisingly brilliant match.
