Cats the Musical Pounces into Hammer Hall Melbourne: A Purr-fect Celebration of 40 Years!
The iconic musical ‘CATS’ has officially taken the stage at Hammer Hall in Melbourne, making history as the first musical of its kind to grace this stunning venue. Marking a momentous occasion, this production celebrates the 40th anniversary of ‘Cats’ first Captivating Australian audiences in 1985. Opening night was a highlight for all who attended and was held on New Year’s Eve, this limited-time CATS the musical anniversary celebration tour is running until January 31st.

At the heart of ‘Cats’ lies the whimsical world of the Jellicle tribe, a gathering of feline characters who come together for their annual Jellicle Ball. Here, their venerable leader, Old Deuteronomy, makes the momentous decision of choosing one cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer, where they will be reborn into a new life. While the storyline may be minimalistic, the sheer artistry of the production shines through in its breathtaking choreography, mesmerising dance routines, and exquisite costumes that bring these beloved felines to life. If you have not seen Cats previously, a word of advice, you may get a little more than you bargained for depending on where you are seated in the audience. (Lots of fun and games).
The Melbourne production boasts an exceptional cast, including talents such as Gabriyel Thomas, Todd McKenney, Mark Vincent, Lucy Maunder, Des Flanagan, Jarrod Draper, Leigh Archer, and Mia Dabkowski-Chandler. Each performer brings their unique flair, but it’s Gabriyel Thomas who truly steals the show. Her powerful and emotive rendition of “Memory” as Grizabella is a highlight of the evening.

Todd McKenney is making a thrilling return after many years, and he couldn’t be more excited to showcase how his skills have evolved since he first brought the beloved character Gus to life. Reflecting on his journey, Todd shares, “When I started out, I was new, fresh, and still learning the ropes. Now, after 38 incredible years in the industry, I bring a wealth of stage knowledge and experience to the role.” This time around, he’s not just stepping onto the stage; he’s strutting in with confidence, ready to demonstrate the depth and nuance he’s gained over the years.

From the moment our feline friends take to the stage, the energy in Hammer Hall is electric, with audience members transported into a magical world filled with the charm and mystique of its feline characters. The spectacular choreography and vivid costumes evoke a sense of wonder, making every moment of the performance a feast for the senses.
Des Flanagan takes centre stage, and if you recognize him from “Moulin Rouge,” get ready for an electrifying transformation! He embodies Rum Tum Tugger, a role he’s always dreamed of playing, and it’s clear that he’s revelling in every cheeky, flamboyant moment. With his alter ego being delightfully promiscuous, Des brings a unique sparkle to the character, making his performance at Hammer Hall even more magical. Growing up on a steady diet of David Bowie rather than traditional musical theatre, he’s thrilled to flex his vocal prowess in this dynamic role. It’s a thrilling blend of rock star charisma and theatrical flair, and Des is absolutely owning it!

Don’t miss your chance to experience this extraordinary celebration of one of the most beloved musicals in history. With its limited run until January 31st, ‘Cats’ at Hammer Hall is a must-see event that promises to be a memorable experience for theatre lovers and feline enthusiasts alike.
