The Opening of “Ordinary Days” at Forty-Five Downstairs
Last Thursday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of ‘Ordinary Days’ at the intimate venue of Forty-Five Downstairs, conveniently nestled right next to Cumulus Inc. From the moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped by a warm, inviting atmosphere that echoed the charm of a New York warehouse, the perfect backdrop for a story set in the vibrant heart of New York City.

The production stars the incredibly talented Melanie Bird, whom many of us adore from her stellar performance in ‘Sister Act.’ As Deb, a grad student grappling with the pressures of academia and her quest for purpose, Bird is nothing short of mesmerising. Her portrayal of Deb is a masterclass in vulnerability and humour, bringing to life a character who is both relatable and compelling. The lyrics she delivers are beautifully crafted, and her dynamic vocal range, combined with her sharp wit, stood out as a highlight of the evening.

Bird’s character, Deb, has a chance encounter with Warren played by Joel Granger, who has a delightful quirkiness and infectious charm. Warren’s zest for life serves as a guiding light for Deb, helping her navigate her struggles and illuminating the path to her own self-discovery. Their interactions are filled with warmth and humour, showcasing the transformative power of connection.

Adding to the rich tapestry of this production are Jason played by Bobby Fox and Claire played by Sarah Granger, a couple navigating the complexities of moving in together. Their journey is a rollercoaster of emotions, with Claire facing more challenges than Jason as she adjusts to his new, profound presence in her life. The tension and tenderness in their relationship culminate in a heartfelt marriage proposal that encapsulates the essence of growth and compromise.

The four characters are beautifully intertwined, each bringing their own unique struggles and triumphs to the stage, which makes for a truly engaging narrative. The entire production spans a brisk 80 minutes, yet it feels like a complete journey, leaving the audience thoroughly satisfied and uplifted.
‘Ordinary Days’ is a celebration of life’s little moments, the relationships that shape us, and the unexpected paths we take. I left Forty-Five Downstairs with a heart full of joy and a renewed sense of appreciation for the everyday experiences that define our lives. This production is a must-see, offering a delightful blend of humour, heart, and music.
