Opposition Leader Brad Battin: Pays his respects this Anzac Day is his hometown of Berwick.

Today, we gather to honour all ANZACS, the 110th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings and the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, which were two pivotal moments in our history. Anzac Day is more than just a date, it’s a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom.

High Street, Berwick.

In my hometown of Berwick in Melbourne’s outer Southeast, the spirit of community thrives, and one name resonates with both respect and admiration, that is Mr Brad Battin. As the State Liberal Member for Berwick and the current opposition leader, Brad is not just a political figure, he is an integral part of our community. This morning, I had the privilege of witnessing once again his commitment firsthand as I paid my respects to our fallen Anzacs on High Street.

As I arrived at the memorial, I was reminded of my long-standing connection to Brad, as he greeted me with a smile and chat this morning. Having attended school with his sister Linda and shared in the experiences of our eldest children attending school together, I’ve seen how Brad embodies the values of service, dedication, and engagement. It was no surprise to see him amongst the crowd, laying a wreath and paying tribute to those who have served our country. His heartfelt words, “Today we commemorate all who served and reflect on their enduring legacy, of their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to our country”, encapsulated the profound respect he holds for our heroes.

Today, in my hometown the Australian flags flew at half-mast and the solemn gun salute echoed through our town, I felt a profound weight in my heart. Anzac Day is not just a date on the calendar; it is a cornerstone of our national identity, a day that binds us together in remembrance and gratitude.

As I stood next to Brad in our local community, I was overwhelmed with emotion, reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who came before us. The stirring notes of our national anthem stirred memories of my childhood, a melody that has accompanied countless significant moments in my life.

I believe it is vital that we preserve these traditions, for they are more than mere customs, they are the threads that weave our collective narrative. Let us honour the past and ensure that the anthem remains a powerful symbol of our unity and resilience on this and every Anzac Day to come.

As we reflect on the sacrifices of our Anzacs today, it is evident that leaders like Brad Battin are crucial for shaping a future that honours this legacy.
