In the title role of Jesus, artist Michael Paynter delivered a performance that will undoubtedly be etched in the annals of theatre history. Em Rusciano aptly described Paynter’s rendition of ‘Gethsemane’ as “something you’ll be talking about for years to come.” Indeed, as he poured his heart and soul into the song, the audience was so moved that they erupted into a standing ovation mid-show, an extraordinary testament to his talent and the emotional weight of the moment.

Playing the pivotal role of Mary, Mahalia Barnes captivated the audience with her phenomenal vocal presence, particularly during her heart-wrenching rendition of “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” Her performance was infused with such raw emotion and conviction that it left many in the audience teary-eyed and in awe.

Javon King took on the role of Judas with an intensity that was nothing short of mesmerising. His portrayal was steeped in pure evil, showcasing his incredible acting skills, vocal prowess, and impressive dance ability. He truly embodied a triple threat, leaving the audience hanging on his every move.

The production also featured the electrifying Ruben Kaye as Herod, who brought a cheeky flair to the character with an eye-catching costume that perfectly balanced the serious themes of the story with a light-hearted touch. His performance added a refreshing dynamic that elicited laughter and applause from the crowd.

Peter Murphy, who played Pilate, also showcased impeccable vocal prowess, further solidifying the cast’s outstanding talent. The staging, though simple, allowed the performances to shine without distraction, with clever microphone use enhancing the overall experience.

This production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is nothing short of incredible. With a cast that truly can sing and a creative vision that captivates, it’s clear that this iteration will resonate with audiences for years to come. Personally, it ranks among my top five theatre experiences, and I’m giving it a resounding 10 out of 10!
If you haven’t yet had the chance to see this mesmerising performance, make sure to secure your tickets. You won’t want to miss out on what is sure to be one of the most talked-about productions of the year!
