Up Close & Personal with Bonnie Anderson
Bonnie, can you share what inspired the themes and sound of your new SINGLE? Are there specific experiences or influences that shaped your creative process this time around?
The main inspiration behind ‘Bad Advice’ was my own revolution, of becoming who I am today and what I had grown through over the years. My roots and passion for music was always around soul music and I really wanted to apply the sounds I loved most into my own music.
I grew up with so much music around me as my mum was also a singer and she played me everything from Janice Joplin to Whitney Houston, Sam Cook to Mariah Carey. I loved big singers and tasteful music and grooves.
The day I wrote ‘Bad Advice,’ I was feeling on top of the world with joy. I was back in LA after many years and ready to completely let myself go and let the creative juices flow. I knew what I wanted to create, a feel-good song that touched on the not-so-great parts of my past and almost thanking them in a way for being where I am today. Not letting any bad vibes or past mistakes define me.
How have your personal experiences over the past few years influenced the music and lyrics you’ve created?
Everything I go through helps me create and write music, I love nothing more than being open and honest through my lyrics. Life has its up and downs and many wild times, that’s what makes it so interesting.
Why Now? What was the driving force behind releasing this album at this particular moment? Was there a specific event or feeling that made you feel that now was the right time to share your music with the world?
Honestly, my son! After having my boy, it felt like the perfect time. I felt a kind of fire inside of me, telling me that the time has come. Since being Mum, I have strived to be the best version of myself in every way and when I am singing and making music, I am by far the best version of myself. So, everything I do is for me and my family.
How do you feel your sound has evolved since your last release? Are there new genres or styles that you’ve explored that you’re particularly excited about?
It’s evolved quite a lot, most of my last releases haven’t really been true to me as an artist. It took me a long time to really trust myself and find my sound. We are forever evolving right? But this time around I am over the moon with what I have created and truly believe in it. I have really gone back to my roots and brought out my own flare of soul meets pop.
Every artistic journey has its challenges. What were some hurdles you faced while creating this album, and how did you overcome them?
Being an independent artist has been the biggest learning curve and challenge. I have always been with a label and now I’m independent. I really wanted to do this on my own this time and being the driving force behind the music and this release process. I guess the challenge was I had no idea how much was involved, it’s a 24-hour job and the juggle of being a mum, a wife and a musician has been incredibly full on. But I love a challenge and I love to work under pressure. I am very proud of what’s to come and all the hard work that’s gone into it.
As you watch the reaction from the SINGLE release, what are you most excited about? Is there a particular song or moment that you can’t wait for your fans to experience?
This is only the beginning; I can’t wait to give everybody a taste of what’s to come. ‘Bad Advice’ is the perfect song to set up my followers to the sound and feel of the rest of the record. I just hope that everyone loves it the way I love it and it finds its way to connect with people. I’m very grateful for the support of my music and can’t wait to continue sharing much, much, more.
