The PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival kicked off in spectacular fashion last night at the iconic Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. The Triumphant X PayPal Premium Runway opened with a touching tribute to the late Shiva Singam, a beloved member of the festival’s team who tragically passed away last year. The evening was not only a celebration of fashion but also a celebration of life and friendship amongst fashionistas.
One of the highlights of the evening was the return of supermodel Elle MacPherson to the catwalk. As she approaches her 60th birthday later this month, Elle proved that age is just a number as she strutted her stuff with grace and elegance. Her presence on the runway was applauded by all and reminded me of the enduring power and beauty of Elle, our Australian fashion icon.
Elle says, “I’m 60 at the end of the month, but let me tell you I feel better now than ever. Coming back and walking for PayPal and the Melbourne Fashion Festival has been phenomenal.”
The runway showcased a mix of established and popular designers, each bringing their unique vision and creativity to the show. From the edgy designs of AJE to the minimalist chic of Anna Quan, there was something for every fashion lover to admire. Bianca Spender, Martin Grant at Christine Ngali, Oroton, and Viktoria & Woods also wowed the audience with their stunning collections, each reflecting the diverse and vibrant Australian fashion scene.
The runway showcased a plethora of vibrant colours and bold designs that left the audience in awe. One standout designer of the evening was AJE, who brought a sense of whimsy and femininity to the runway with their use of pink, ruffles, and puffed sleeves.
Another highlight of the evening was Oroton, a brand that never fails to impress with its timeless and elegant designs. Their showcase of navy-blue designs adorned with stunning tassels was a true showstopper, offering a modern twist on classic silhouettes. The attention to detail and craftsmanship in each piece was evident, showcasing the brand’s dedication to quality and sophistication.
Dominating the runway last night was the resurgence of the trench coat, a perennial favourite for the autumn season. Designers from all backgrounds and aesthetics put their own spin on this timeless staple, showcasing a variety of colours, lengths, and fabrics. From sleek and tailored versions to more oversized and deconstructed styles, the trench coat proved to be a versatile and essential piece for any wardrobe.
A special shoutout goes to Viktoria & Woods, who celebrated their 20th anniversary in the fashion industry with a show-stopping collection that paid homage to their journey and evolution over the past two decades. It was a momentous occasion that reminded us of the enduring impact of Australian designers on the global fashion stage.
The front row was filled with glamorous celebrities and influencers, including Rozalia Russian, Tayla Broad, Olivia Molly Rogers, Aisha Dee, and stylist Meggy Smith. Their presence added an extra layer of excitement and energy to the evening, making it a night to remember for all in attendance.
As the festival continues, we can expect more incredible shows, innovative designs, and unforgettable moments. The PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival is a celebration of creativity, style, and talent, and it’s clear that this year’s event is shaping up to be one of the best yet. So, if you’re a fashion enthusiast or simply looking for some inspiration, be sure to check out the rest of the festival and witness the magic of Australian fashion firsthand.
