COME FROM AWAY tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded air passengers from over 100 countries during the wake of 9/11. In the face of tragedy, the community of Newfoundland gave the passengers the warmest of welcomes, opening up their homes, schools, churches and anywhere else that could be turned into temporary accommodation for the “plane people”. The small town suddenly doubled in population for several days, and this musical is the story of what happened, and the effect it had on passengers and the Gander community. Cultures clashed, and nerves ran high, but as uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.
The relatively small cast of 14 actors each play several parts within the show, and with simple costume changes, they transform from plane passenger to Newfoundland residents, an intelligent use of choreography and cast.
A global success story, COME FROM AWAY opened on Broadway to rave reviews in 2017 and has continued its record-breaking triumph with a second production in Toronto, a third production touring North America and a West End production that has just been nominated for nine Olivier Awards. COME FROM AWAY has just opened at Melbourne’s newly refurbished Comedy Theatre.
