HADESTOWN OPENS IN MELBOURNE – with Lucy Durack, Ruva Ngwenya & Alinta Chidzey among the special guests.

A Night to Remember: The Enchantment of HADESTOWN’s Opening Night

On Saturday night, the atmosphere at Her Majesty’s Theatre was electric as a host of special guests gathered to witness the highly anticipated opening of HADESTOWN. Among them were luminaries like Lucy Durack, Ruva Ngwenya, who dazzled audiences as Tina Turner in the Australian musical of the same name, Alinta Chidzey star of Moulin Rouge, and tennis legend Todd Woodbridge with his wife Natasha Provis.

HADESTOWN, a modern retelling of the mythical tales of Orpheus and Eurydice, alongside the power dynamics of King Hades and his wife Persephone, enthralled the audience from the very first note. The musical’s score, rich and haunting, perfectly complements the raw emotions portrayed on stage. One voice, in particular, stood out amongst the stellar cast: Melbourne-born Eliza Soriano, who made her Opera Australia debut as Eurydice. Her powerful yet angelic vocals resonated throughout the theatre, transporting me to a world of romantic fantasy filled with love and heartbreak.

Opera singer and concert performer Adrian Tamburini who plays Hades, is also one to watch out for. His deep Bass-Baritone voice is defining with its depth, that resonates with his menacing character.

What struck me most about HADESTOWN was its simplicity. The stage, adorned with minimalistic set pieces, and the understated costumes allow the storytelling to take centre stage. This is a narrative that is as heartfelt as it is captivating, it draws you in and immerses you in the complex emotions of its characters. The focus on storytelling combined with the rich musicality creates a powerful experience that resonates long after the final curtain falls.

If you cherish romance and enjoy narratives that tug at the heartstrings, HADESTOWN is an absolute must-see. It’s not just a musical; it’s a journey into the depths of love, loss, and the pursuit of dreams.
