On Friday night, I had the privilege of witnessing a performance that was not only eye-opening but deeply transformative; ‘The Black Woman of Gippsland’, penned by the talented Andrea James, known for her acclaimed work on ‘Sunshine Super Girl’. This modern mystery, now playing at the Melbourne Theatre Company’s Southbank Theatre, is a poignant exploration of Victoria’s dark and often overlooked past. Running until May 31, it’s a must-see for anyone who values the power of storytelling to illuminate our shared history.

This production by Melbourne Theatre Company, draws us into the journey of Jacinta, a woman grappling with the pressures of family expectations and academic stagnation. Yet, as she delves into the depths of history, she discovers that the tales we think we know are often shrouded in myths and half-truths.

Jacinta’s quest to uncover the truth behind a figure described as a ‘white woman’ living among the Gunaikurnai people of Gippsland in the 1840s is not just an academic pursuit; it’s a path to understanding the pain and sorrow of those who came before us. The play masterfully intertwines beauty, tragedy, and rebellion, creating a tapestry that resonates with the audience long after the show ends.

What struck me most about this performance was the actors’ powerful portrayals brought forth the emotional weight of the history they were portraying. It’s a reminder of the importance of confronting the uncomfortable truths of our past rather than glossing over them.
As Jacinta’s investigation unfolds, we are invited to reflect on our own connections to history and the legacies we carry, urging us to listen to the voices that have been marginalised.

I walked away from this production not just enlightened but compelled to engage with the histories that shape our present and future.
Do not miss this opportunity to witness a performance that is both a celebration of resilience and a call to action. Join Jacinta on her journey and allow yourself to be moved by the powerful storytelling that is ‘The Black Woman of Gippsland’.
