From the moment the show began, it was evident that this was no ordinary concert. Anthony, with his powerful vocals and magnetic stage presence, spoke passionately about his long-standing admiration for John Foreman, reminiscing about their first connection when he was just 16 years old. He fondly recalled sending John his demo tapes and shared heart-warming memories of performing on Bert Newton’s, “Good Morning Australia”.
Last Friday evening, Melbourne’s iconic Hammer Hall vibrated with the energy and talent of two of Australia’s most beloved performers, Anthony Callea, and Tim Campbell. Joined by the brilliant John Foreman and the Australian Pops Orchestra, the duo delivered a spectacular tribute to the timeless hits of Elton John and George Michael that had audiences dancing in their seats.
A particularly touching moment came when the duo honoured Patti Newton, who was in attendance to celebrate what would have been her 50th wedding anniversary with the late Bert Newton. In a heartfelt gesture, Anthony and Tim presented her with beautiful flowers, a tribute to Bert’s unwavering love and support for them throughout their careers.
The concert itself was a musical feast. Anthony, known for his stunning rendition of “The Prayer,” delivered a performance that brought many audience members to tears, including myself. His emotional depth and soaring voice blended perfectly with Tim’s charismatic stage presence, creating a synergy that left everyone in awe.
Together, they showcased phenomenal vocal prowess and delivered magical harmonies when singing together.
As the night progressed, the audience was treated to an exhilarating finale featuring Wham’s greatest hits. The infectious energy of “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and the empowering anthem “Freedom” had everyone on their feet, dancing and celebrating the music that has defined generations. Tim gave the audience a laugh as he danced with 90’s style moves with Anth as Tim calls him, pretending to be embarrassed with him saying “STOP IT”, to Tim.
Adding to the evening’s glamour, the pair were impeccably dressed by Melbourne designer Con Ilio, showcasing their flair for fashion, with John Foreman also getting in on the fashion scene with three outfit changes, but it was Tim’s shoes that stole the limelight!
If you missed this enchanting tribute, mark your calendars for their National Tour in 2025 — it’s a show you won’t want to miss!
