A Spectacular Affair: The 2024 Penfolds Derby at Flemington
Yesterday, Flemington came alive with the thrilling atmosphere hosting the first race of the Melbourne Cup Carnival with the 2024 Penfolds Derby, drawing an impressive crowd of 81,612 racegoers dressed to the nines in a stunning black and white dress code. The elegance of the day was matched only by the excitement of the races, making it an unforgettable celebration of both fashion and sport.
At the heart of the festivities was the world-famous Birdcage precinct, where the who’s who of entertainment, sport, corporate, and media mingled in style. The air was electric as famous faces graced the event, bringing a glamorous edge to the occasion.
Penfolds hosted a star-studded lineup of special guests, including Tom and Emma Hawkins, glamorous New Zealand model Georgia Fowler, and the very charming Lucia Hawley, niece of the illustrious Nicole Kidman.
Lucia was delighted to do a fashion takeover chat on our microphone. Lucia said, ” Today I’m wearing a Toni Maticevski dress, I don’t know where my stockings are from, perhaps Levante, my shoes are Christian Louboutin and my hairpiece would you believe is from Zara.” Lucia was accompanied by her three best friends and was looking forward to celebrating the Derby with Penfolds.
Australian label Forever New dressed the newly engaged Annalise Dalins, alongside the stylish Tayla Broad and Demi Brereton, capturing the essence of elegance and keeping to the traditions of raceway. Josh proudly filmed Annalise against the media wall upon arrival as she radiated with excitement.

Kate Waterhouse said, “today I’m in bespoke Scanlan and Theodore, I’ve spent the last couple of week designing the outfit with their designers at Scanlan and Theodore, we’ve worked through this to create a custom look and I’m so excited to be wearing it today.”
The Derby’s exquisite Black and White Racewear theme, showcased spectacular millinery that elevated every outfit. The stunning contrasting accessories truly set the scene, while talented Australian designers and stylists dressed our most famous faces to perfection. Incorporating heirloom and vintage pieces, the fashion was not just impressive—it was unforgettable.

As we reflect on the dazzling arrivals, it was refreshing to see that everyone dressed with etiquette blending both classic and contemporary styles whilst also paying tribute to the theme of the Derby.
