Returns with “Baby Blue” and “When It Comes to Loving You”

After a six-year hiatus that saw him trade global pop stardom for elite sport, Cody Simpson makes a bold and energised return to music with “Baby Blue” and “When It Comes to Loving You,” released via BMG.

Co-written with producer Harrison Borts, the tracks lean into a sun-soaked, feel-good sound.

“In my return to music, I had been experimenting in the studio for almost a year when one day I came in extremely open hearted and open-minded, sensing something vibrant and new wanted to come through. I intended to create something that felt like the coming of spring, like a pure expression of joy whilst sounding cool enough to throw on driving down the highway with your mates. I grabbed a guitar next to my friend and producer Harrison Borts on synths, and this is where the sound that birthed ‘Baby Blue’ and ‘When It Comes to Loving You’ was born. I hope everybody enjoys listening to them as much as I enjoyed making them. I’ve been buzzing ever since!” – Cody Simpson

Its music made for open roads, late afternoons, and a renewed sense of creative freedom. “Baby Blue” is paired with a cinematic video directed by Antony Muse, following Simpson through the streets of Los Angeles in a spontaneous, performance-led journey that mirrors the track’s lightness and momentum. A second visual for “When It Comes to Loving You” is set to follow, forming a two-part return.

The release signals more than new music, it marks a full-circle moment. In 2020, Simpson stepped away from the industry to pursue competitive swimming, earning a place on the Australian national team and competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where he reached the 100m butterfly final and secured gold and silver in relay events. With multiple national titles and a World Cup podium finish, his sporting chapter closed after narrowly missing Olympic qualification.

From YouTube discovery at 13 to touring with Justin Bieber and landing a Billboard Top 10 album with Surfer’s Paradise, Simpson has long proven his staying power. Beyond music, he’s expanded into theatre, most recently starring with Opera Australia in Guys and Dolls.

Now, with a new label, a refined sound and a clear sense of direction, Simpson’s return feels intentional, elevated and entirely on his own terms. If these releases are any indication, 2026 is set to be a defining year.
