Last night, Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre was buzzing with excitement as the much-anticipated production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” opened to a thrilled audience. And let me tell you, I was not prepared for just how powerful this production would be!
With three parts and two intervals, this jet-black comedy may be a long haul at the theatre, but every second is worth your time. Starring the real-life couple Kat Stewart and David Whiteley as Martha and George, their stage presence is nothing short of electrifying. Stewart’s portrayal of Martha as a demanding and manipulative wife, constantly belittling George, is both chilling and captivating.
The first part of the play is filled with hilarious one-liners and witty banter, setting the stage for what’s to come. But it’s in the second part that we truly see the depth of Martha’s darkness as their unsuspecting guests, Emily Goddard and Harvey Zielinski as Honey and Nick, arrive at their doorstep. As the young married couple becomes entangled in Martha and George’s web of humiliation and inevitable compromises, the tension in the theatre becomes palpable.
The chemistry between the actors is undeniable, drawing the audience in and holding them captive until the very end. Stewart and Whiteley’s dynamic as Martha and George is both intense and heartbreaking, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.
“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” is a must-see production that will leave you breathless. So, grab your tickets and prepare for a night of gripping drama, dark humour, and unforgettable performances.
