Celebrating a milestone is always a cause for joy and reflection, and that is exactly what happened at 400 Gradi on Melbourne’s renowned Lygon Street. The iconic restaurant marked its 15th birthday this week with an exclusive event that brought together a star-studded guest list. Among the attendees were esteemed chefs Adam D’Sylva and Shane Delia, world middleweight champion Michael Zerafa, DJ Perri Lee, TV personality Jo Hall, fashion designer Dom Bagnato, Goggle Box star Anastasia Katselas, and respected figure John St Peeters OAM.
At the heart of this celebration is the visionary behind 400 Gradi, founder and owner Johnny Di Francesco. Known worldwide for his mastery of Neapolitan pizza, Di Francesco has become a true ambassador of Italian culinary excellence. His dedication to perfecting the art of pizza-making has garnered him international recognition and a loyal following of food enthusiasts.
As guests arrived at the flagship restaurant, they were greeted by an atmosphere filled with joy and anticipation. The evening kicked off with a delectable assortment of Polpette, a mouth-watering meatball station that showcased the restaurant’s commitment to using the finest ingredients. Diners were then treated to Gnocchi Napoli, a traditional Italian dish that delighted the taste buds with its rich flavours. And let’s not forget the Arancini, crispy and flavourful rice balls that exemplify the essence of Italian cuisine.
But it wasn’t just the exquisite food that captivated the attendees; it was the magnificent Italian-style grazing table that stole the show. A true feast for the eyes, the table was adorned with an abundance of delectable treats, showcasing the diversity and beauty of Italian gastronomy. From artisanal cheeses to succulent cured meats and vibrant antipasti, every detail was meticulously curated to create a sensory experience like no other.
As the night unfolded, guests revelled in the company of friends and loved ones. Laughter echoed through the air as old acquaintances were reunited and new connections were forged. The energy was electric, fuelled by the shared love for good food, great company, and the remarkable journey that 400 Gradi has embarked upon.
The pinnacle of the evening came with the cutting of the cake by Johnny and his wife, that commemorated the 15 years of success for the Gradi Group.
Johnny said, “I want everyone to really enjoy themselves tonight, I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the past 15 years of this brand that started off here in Brunswick.
A little 48-seater restaurant has become a 220-seater restaurant and we’re expanding not only in Australia but also globally.
Thanks to my suppliers, family, friends, and guests, also to my long-term staff who have been here for 15 plus years. This industry isn’t easy and there are a lot of chefs in the room tonight, and we’ve just been through the worst two years of our lives. We’re past that now and we’re all going to get back to being bigger and better and we want you all to continue the journey along with us.”
Reflecting on this milestone event, it is impossible not to be inspired by the journey of 400 Gradi. From its humble beginnings to its status as one of Melbourne’s most beloved culinary destinations, the restaurant embodies the spirit of perseverance, innovation, and excellence.
