The award-winning pop musical ‘&Juliet’, led by Lorinda May Merrypor in the title role of Juliet, is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s most iconic love story, Romeo and Juliet. This unique musical has been praised for its innovative use of pop music, composed by Grammy award-winning songwriter Max Martin.
The musical features Kelly Clarkson’s ‘since you’ve been gone’, Backstreet Boys ‘as long as you love me’, Celine Dion’s, ‘That’s the way it is’, Britney Spears ‘Oops!… I did it again, and NSYNC, ‘It’s gonna be me’, to name a few. All of these hit songs have been written and co-written by musical genius Max Martin. I asked Max what his favourite song that he’s ever written was and Max said, “they’re all my children, every song has its time full of love”.
Max’s music tells this story in the most upbeat and lifting way. Clever lyrics and catchy melodies make you want to move and groove in your seat, along with the energy and passion from this incredibly talented stellar cast.
The musical also features a diverse cast of characters including Australian music industry legend Rob Mills as Shakespeare, while musical theatre icon Amy Lehpamer tries to rewrite the narrative as his wife Anne.
In a world where the concept of love is often limited and influenced by traditional norms, ‘&Juliet’ is a modern musical that is changing the narrative. It tells the story of Juliet, a young woman who is determined to break free from the traditions of love and choose the path that is true to her heart.
Juliet embarks on a journey of self-discovery and freedom. She is not afraid to challenge the status quo and to fight for what she believes in.
Completing the dazzling cast of principals is star of the stage and ARIA #1 winner Casey Donovan as Angélique; Broadway, West End and Australian music theatre star Hayden Tee as Lance; Jesse Dutlow as May and Yashith Fernando as Francois.
Playing that other half of the star-crossed lovers is recent Fangirls heartthrob Blake Appelqvist.
This musical reminds us of the power to choose whom we love and never to let anyone tell us otherwise. Will Juliet end up with Romeo? You’ll have to go and see for yourself!
Enjoy guys, it’s a 10/10 from me.
