I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Danish Designer Birgitte Olrik who showcased her latest collection at RPM Melbourne in Carlton earlier last month.
Birgitte is creative to say the least and a traveller at heart, her collections have come about from her trips to exotic places and her Bi-annual inspirational journeys to L.A. It was over a decade ago Birgitte was selling her hand made designs from the boot of her car. Birgitte’s creative style was inspired when she began travelling Asia, meeting artisans and buying collectables along the way.
Birgitte resides in Bali for 6 months of the year and the other 6 months are spent in her native Copenhagen, where she has her personal design studio set up.
Interview
Does where you live and your lifestyle impact on your creativity as a designer, and what you design? ‘Of course, I like the process of East meeting West in Rabens Saloner. It is important for me to create that in everything’
What inspired you to become a designer and what is your design style? My urge was to create and design something beautiful – to create my own Rubens Universe. My design reflects my personal style, cool and relaxed.
What fabrics do you like to work with? I like to work with all kinds of fabrics, especially drape fabrics, and then I have a big passion for colours. We work together with local talented colour specialists in Bali, what they can create is pure magic.
What can we expect to see from your next collection? Bright colours, Eastern handmade prints and draped dresses. A collection that exudes feminine coolness.
What does your brand represent? I have the pleasure of working with a fantastic and talented team in my design studio in Copenhagen. Rabens Saloner represents a mix of all specialties; it is clothes made with a huge passion for design and life.
This Danish Designer will continue to inspire the fashion industry the world over, for some time to come. Birgitte Olrik stands for women to be individually unique, to believe in themselves and create their own style.
‘Personality is important, but you have to dress accordingly. I design for women like that – women with a strong sense of personality, and I want you to feel good in my clothes’
