The single girl’s guide to Valentines Day.

So how did one day become so significant for romance and lovers the world over? It is the one day that romance is heightened, and professions of love are magnified. Valentine’s Day is the day of love and showing your loved one or object of your affections, how much you mean to them. Usually with a gesture, an expensive gift or romantic dinner. Some lucky people use this opportunity to propose marriage. So, what happens when you are single and don’t have a significant other in your life? What if there are no prospects around, you have friends that are loved up so you don’t want to see them go all gaga over their partners, which reminds you that you are SINGLE and are not being showered with kisses and love.

What exactly does a single gal do on a day when love is all around yet not around you?  Firstly, get into the right mind frame. The way you handle this one day is important. Many women can be melancholic and focus on what they don’t have. They may feel a need or craving for love and affection. They may feel left out as some friends have dates and are in relationships.

It depends on the focus of the day. Why place so much importance on one day when really love should be shown to a significant other every day. Change your perspective a little at this point in focusing on what you do have, not what you don’t have. Valentine’s day has turned into a very commercial thing and when something is like that it can take away the value of the true meaning of what love and affection truly are.

There are some women that treat Valentine’s day as a day of mourning and are very down and out over the fact they are single, lonely and don’t feel love. I say how about treating it as a normal day, don’t focus on it and do something amazing for yourself on that day. Why wait for a significant other to give you love, presents or take you to dinner? Do it for yourself. Why is that so wrong? It is important to give to yourself, treat yourself the way you want to be treated on Valentine’s Day.

Indulge in one of your favourite treats. Buy yourself something you’ve always wanted or cook yourself a fabulous meal. Take pride, take control and just enjoy. Take the emphasis off the fact that it’s so taboo being single on a day where love is celebrated. Celebrate the love you have for yourself. It is amazing how good you feel when you shift your thinking.

Dress up and head out for cocktails with some single friends in the same boat. Maybe a girl’s night will be all you need. Love and support with your friends is a great way to lift you when you’re down about a situation. Always dress to impress. Take pride in yourself as a woman. Embrace all of you. The strengths, weaknesses and all that which is part of you. When you love yourself first and foremost, you will be surprised at what you will attract.

Celebrating singlehood is a great thing too. So, whilst lovers and couples get to have their moment why can’t singles? Have Valentines Day with singletons! Go to a social mixer. There are many things one can do to get through the day. There is nothing wrong about being single. It is only a stigma if you place one there. Let go of the titles, the labels like married, single, separated and go beyond that. You are a person of value so don’t devalue yourself by placing emphasis on a title. It is not like you’re incomplete if you don’t have a plus one. On the contrary, you would rather be at ease and in a great space on your own than in an unloving and disconnected relationship. Just think how much worse that would be. Don’t let all the advertising and what society says fool you.

Valentine’s day is just a day that was part of a historical story about a loved-up man. It then became a tradition through the centuries of time. It does not place any significance about a person or time. It is a celebration of love. So just go celebrate you. Imagination is everything. So, dream of your perfect valentine’s date. There is nothing wrong with dreaming after all.   Put on those stilettos, get your hair done and go spoil yourself.  After all, you are worth it. So, live it!!
